Eldrick “Tiger” Woods is renowned for his incredible intensity and ability on the golf course. But there is more to this athlete than just focus and talent. Tiger has certain qualities that all top level athletes seem to have.

They have an unwavering commitment to winning, a fighter’s attitude, a willingness to take risks, combined with a level of consistency that they use to place themselves in a position to challenge for the championship.

Over the years, we’ve seen these qualities not only in Tiger, but in other long-term successful individual-sport athletes like Roger Federer, for example. Or in the organization, culture and mind-set of teams like the New York Yankees in baseball or the Detroit Red Wings in hockey.

They always seem to be in the hunt, if not winning everything!

It’s these qualities that Tiger Woods brings to the PGA, and in this writer’s opinion, I think it’s made better players out of many of the PGA’s top golfers since Tiger burst onto the PGA scene.

Yes, they had talent, yes, they felt the pressure to win, yes, they are a competitive bunch, but it seems that when Tiger Woods is in the mix, it makes the better players play better!

All the more reason to admire the skill and tenacity of all of these top PGA athletes like Phil Mickelson, Mike Weir, Padraig Harrington, Anthony Kim and many others who rise to the occasion when Tiger is in the hunt.

To be the best, you have to beat the best.

Tiger Woods is back on the PGA Tour after his recent personal issues, and it will be interesting to see whether he can successfuly continue his quest to be the best golfer…Ever!
